part 3 (because i still forgot some, oops)
great now im thought stuck on skinamarink…..being a kid means being horrifically, inconceivably vulnerable and in danger at all times and no other movie understands that like skinamarink. its not Just being scared of the dark or not Understanding higher concepts. at any given moment, u can just be. hurt. injured, taken, moved, manipulated, trapped. u have No agency. at any given moment, the things that are Supposed to be reliable and safe and good (parents, toys) can suddenly hurt u or become strange and frightening. and there is truly nothing u can do. the life of a child is so mind-bogglingly unpredictable and unsafe in so many ways, especially in an environment where their wellbeing is not prioritized. literally anything can be done to u as a child and even if u Can understand it (which u rarely can), u can’t do anything about it but incorporate it into ur worldview. u can’t break holes thru the walls when the windows and doors disappear. u just have to keep walking thru the same hallways and wait to see what the world will do to u next.
not everyone that loves horror is fucked in the head and you shouldnt assume they are!! i of course am but not everyone is
People should make more doomed by narratives siblings relationship.
Like with lovers you can just sever it and not have it related to you ever again but with siblings how could you?
You grow up with them you raise them or they raised you you both know how unforgiving the world is to both of you? You would die for them but will hate them for doing the same and yet none of you would regret it and both of you know it. They could be the person you loath the most and miss the most cause you still remember how they sneaked a candy into your hands. You can sever the tie but you can never look away at what you’ve lost, at whom you’ve lost because fate doesn’t allow you to be together, eating dinners in quiet peace, if only there’s another life, another time, where i can make you another plate of pancakes i would im sorry im sorry im sorry —
You know, one thing that surprised me about Skinamarink (that I definitely wasn’t expecting) was how often the lights were on. I’d been fully prepared for the movie to rely on darkness to be scary, and there are times when it does, but the thing is, the kids utilize light throughout the whole movie. They turn the lights on when going upstairs, or into the kitchen, or when they need in the closet. They keep plugging the night light back in and turn the TV on for company when they’re feeling unsettled, and none of it matters. It doesn’t matter that the lights work because the monster has so much power that even the light can’t stop it, and it doesn’t even feel the need to try and hide this. It let’s them have the light and the TV and even their parents because it knows none of it will save them.
Fucking horrifying.
